Import Ceramic Tableware: 10-Point Checklist

Importing ceramics isn’t hard, but the details decide whether you receive sellable stock or a headache. Use this ten-point checklist before and during your first order to de-risk the process.

1. Confirm Certifications

Match certificates to your market: FDA (US), LFGB/EU (Europe), Prop 65 (California). Request dated, product-specific test reports—see our certifications guide.

2. Vet the Factory

Check business licenses, export history, and—ideally—a third-party audit or video factory tour. A verified manufacturer profile builds confidence.

3. Order and Inspect Samples

Never skip samples. Check weight, glaze evenness, decal alignment, and rim finish. Compare against your approved prototype.

4. Define Packaging

Specify gift box, bulk, or PDQ display, plus protective inserts. Packaging directly affects breakage rates in transit.

5. Agree on Incoterms

Clarify EXW, FOB, or CFR, and who handles freight insurance. FOB is common and balances control and simplicity.

6. Set a QC Plan

Agree on an AQL level (e.g., AQL 2.5 for major defects) and whether a pre-shipment inspection is required.

7. Lock Lead Time in Writing

Get a confirmed production and shipping schedule, with penalties if slip is significant. Our MOQ & lead time guide sets expectations.

8. Plan the Container Mix

Use mixed loading to hit minimums efficiently and balance your SKU range.

9. Prepare Customs Docs

Have commercial invoice, packing list, HS codes, and certificates ready. Correct HS codes prevent clearance delays.

10. Arrange After-Sales

Agree how breakage claims and reorders are handled before you pay the balance.
