If you’re sourcing ceramic tableware for your own brand, you’ll quickly run into two terms: OEM and ODM. They sound similar but change who does the design work, how much you invest up front, and how unique your product ends up being. This guide clarifies both models so you can brief suppliers confidently and avoid costly misunderstandings.
What OEM Means
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) means you provide the design—shape, size, decal, glaze, packaging—and the factory produces it to your spec, often with your logo. You own the creative direction; the factory owns the manufacturing. This is ideal when you already have a clear product vision or existing best-sellers you want reproduced.
What ODM Means
ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) means the factory provides the existing design, and you brand it as your own. You choose from the supplier’s catalog of proven shapes and simply apply your logo, colors, or packaging. ODM gets you to market faster and with far lower development cost, at the expense of exclusivity.
When to Choose Which
Choose OEM if you want a differentiated product, have in-house design resources, or are protecting a unique concept. Choose ODM if you’re launching quickly, testing a market, or working with a limited budget. Many importers start with ODM to validate demand, then move to OEM for hero products.
What We Need From You (OEM)
To start an OEM project, share: technical drawings or reference samples, target dimensions and capacity, glaze and decal references (Pantone or photos), packaging requirements, and estimated annual volume. The more precise the brief, the fewer sampling rounds you’ll need.
The Sampling Steps
A typical flow: (1) confirm specs and quote, (2) pay a sample/mold fee, (3) receive a prototype for approval, (4) adjust if needed, (5) sign off and begin mass production. Budget 2–4 weeks for sampling depending on complexity.
Cost and MOQ Differences
